Your application pack, as described below, is due by the end of November. Applications may be accepted after this date subject to existing waiting list.

Requirements

To apply for the PGDipGIS/MGIS programme, candidates require an undergraduate degree (or approved equivalent - such as via relevant professional experience - ad eundum status), normally with a B average or higher, and show the ability for postgraduate study.

Candidates shall also have completed at least two undergraduate courses in GIS, at least one of which should be at 300-level or above. In exceptional circumstances, candidates may be approved by the MGIS Director for entry to the programme without two undergraduate courses in GIS, if they have significant relevant work experience which serves as adequate preparation for the programme.

If you do not have these two pre-requisite courses, however, you may want to consider the following options:

Course 1:

  • Geog 205: Introduction to GIS at The University of Canterbury either during Semester 2 (July - October) or the summer Semester (Nov – December)

  • Geog 215 or PHYG 415: Introduction to Geographical Information Systems and Science (GIS) at Victoria University of Wellington during Trimester 2 (July – October)

Course 2:

  • Geog 324: Advanced GIS at The University of Canterbury during Semester 1 (February-April)

  • Geog 323: Geospatial Analysis in the Social and Environmental Sciences at The University of Canterbury during Semester 2 (July to October)

  • Geog 315: Advanced Geographical Information Systems and Science (GIS) at Victoria University of Wellington during Trimester 2 (July – October)

Please see the local university web pages for more information on the courses itemised above.
If time is limited and you do not have a second GIS course as a prerequisite, at the discretion of the director of the MGIS we can provide an alternative online course package that would meet the required prerequisites and would involve approximately 100 hours of work.
